Language Assessment Centre for Northern Ontario

The language assessment centre provides clients with free language assessments and referral services for government-funded English training programs.  A certified language assessor will travel to outlying itinerant sites for language assessments where applicable.

Who is eligible?

All newcomers to Canada are eligible for a language assessment except those born in Canada, just visiting with a temporary visa (visitors or international students) or immigrants who have become citizens whose first language is English.  You must be 18 years of age or older.

What do I bring to the assessment?

You will be required to present proof of your residency in Ontario, so please bring your original documents and photo ID to your assessment.

What can I expect at the assessment?

A certified Language Assessor will test how good your English skills are in listening, speaking, reading and writing based on the Canadian language benchmarks.  For more information about the Canadian language benchmarks go to this site:  www.language.ca

Please note that the assessment process can take up to 3 hours.  Also child-minding is not available while taking the test.  Cell phones must be turned off during testing.

Proof of English Ability for Citizenship Purposes:

A Language Assessment
  • does not provide proof of language proficiency for citizenship
  • is required before being placed in a government funded English training program
Government-funded English training programs can provide a certificate for citizenship purposes but you must attend for at least 3 months.
