Community Connections Program

I decided to get involved in the Community Connections program about 4 years ago now with the intention to try and make a positive difference for newcomers to Canada. Since joining the program it has been a remarkably positive and empowering experience for others and as well for me. Now, my fiancé and I continue to spend time with newcomer families to help them integrate into our community

I got involved with TMBA during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was new to Thunder Bay and felt disconnected from the community. Being stuck inside and not being able to engage with others was very isolating and I wanted to get involved in a way that felt meaningful. With my background in English instruction and previous work with immigrant and refugee individuals I felt I could have the most impact working with the newcomers connected to the TBMA-- helping integrate them into the community and engage them as much as possible despite the barriers preventing them from having a typical community integration experience.

Volunteering as an English Conversation Circle Facilitator with TBMA has been an enriching experience, offering me the opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Engaging in conversations about food, culture, and dance within our vibrant community unveiled the rich tapestry that is TBMA. Each dialogue became a celebration of our shared experiences and differences, fostering a profound appreciation for multiculturalism. Volunteering as an English facilitator at TBMA was truly a unique and rewarding experience for me. Helping newcomers improve their language skills and adjust to life in their new country (Canada) was both fulfilling and inspiring. I really enjoyed seeing the growth and confidence in my students as they learned to communicate more effectively in English.
